What is artificial intelligence?

Chances are, you've heard that question, or asked it yourself because interest in this exciting technology has never been higher.

We need only to look to science fiction to get an idea of how the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) took form.

Likewise, AI was a dream brought to life in the cinema as early as 1927 with the German science-fiction feature "Metropolis" which is incredible considering it was a silent film.

We didn't even know how to put sound to film when they produced "Metropolis." Yet somehow this dystopian silent feature foretold a future that is strikingly similar to present-day life.

Not only that, but we can trace the idea of thinking robots all the way back to Greek mythology with the story of "Jason and the Argonauts" in which Talos a giant bronze statue comes to life.

Expanding our horizons

Our understanding of what we can actually achieve with technology has expanded exponentially since those early science fiction days, and it shows in real life as much as in our fictional characters.

Take the 1968 movie "2001 A Space Odyssey's" Hal 9000, for instance; did we choose a female voice for Siri, Alexa, and our Google Assistant because Hal's masculine voice conjures fear in our collective consciousness?

As our personal assistants advance, we're beginning to see how much they can actually learn about us. While this technology is beneficial, it's also a little disconcerting to many.

The truth is, today our advanced AI systems are so much a part of everyday life, that most of the time we don't even realize it's artificial intelligence at work.

But What Is Artifical Intelligence, Exactly?

Computer scientist, John McCarthy came up with the term artificial intelligence in 1955. In short, AI describes a technology that blurs the line between humans and machines.

Simply stated, AI is the idea that every part of learning can be described in detail enough for a machine to simulate intelligence. McCarthy broke the process down into these parts:

There's so much data floating around these days that humans can't keep up with it all. So it makes sense that we turn to technology to gather and use the information.

The thing is, humor is tricky for humans; it's even more challenging for AI. 

Some studies might give artificial intelligence an understanding of what humans find funny or not. Except one of the challenges with humor and other aspects of human communications is that there are no clear rules.
