Best HDMI Cable – The Best Brands of Reliable Cables

best hdmi cable

If you want to stream between devices, an HDMI cable is a necessity. However, not all HDMI cables are alike. This handy list gives you the breakdown of 2019’s most popular models.

Product FAQs

Not everyone knows the ins and outs of cables. Even the tech-savvy may find extensive research on the subject a little dull. With that in mind, we gathered questions consumers may have when shopping for the best HDMI cable.

best hdmi cable

1. What Is RoHS Compliance?

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances and is a directive established by the European Union concerning which materials may be used to make electronics.

2. Why Are Connectors Plated in Gold?

Gold is an excellent conductor and doesn’t oxidize the way other metals do. Some connectors are plated in 24K (pure) gold, while others are plated using gold alloy.

3. How Does Wire Gauge Affect an HDMI Cable’s Function?

Cables are given an AWG (American Wire Gauge) rating which indicates the thickness of the cable. The lower the number, the thicker the cable, and the more data it can carry.

How We Determined Our Top 10 List

We scoured product descriptions, review articles and customer reviews to determine the top HDMI cables. We then awarded points to each product based on its benefits, quality and price, and arranged the list according to scores.

HDMI Cable Price Range

The price of HDMI cables has a huge range. A cable can cost anywhere from a few bucks to over $150 depending on the length and AWG rating.

Top 10 HDMI Cables

Monoprice Select Series High Speed HDMI Cable, 4K @ 24Hz, 10.2Gbps,...
  • Supports all High Speed HDMI features
  • Gold plated plugs for smooth, corrosion-free connectors
  • Ferrite cores eliminate RFI/EMI interference

The Monoprice Select takes our top spot with its great options for an affordable price. It comes in a wider variety of lengths than our other picks, meaning you don’t have the predicament of deciding whether to purchase an awkwardly long cable or an inconveniently short one. The Monoprice Select facilitates 16-bit color for high-quality viewing, possesses connector jackets plated in 24-karat gold, and meets RoHS compliance standards.

Our only complaint is that the cable isn’t braided. A braided cord is usually more durable than regular plastic and can mean a longer lifespan for your product. However, the Monoprice Select does come with a lifetime warranty, so in the event your cable breaks, you’re covered for a replacement.

SIIG ProHD High Speed HDMI Cable, 2 Meters (CB-H20112-S1)
  • Ready for today's high-definition & tomorrows - supports uncompressed resolutions up to 1080p and beyond!
  • 120Hz refresh rate support offers clear, smooth, flicker-free video
  • High-Speed (category 2) HDMI - single-link bandwidth speeds up to 340 MHz (10.2Gbps) to support current high-definition...

While the SIIG ProHD doesn’t have quite as many choices as our number one pick, there are still three lengths available to accommodate your entertainment arrangements. It isn’t HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) certified, which means that it lacks a protocol that inhibits duplication of copyrighted material. This certification isn’t considered an industry standard at this time, but more and more electronic products sold possess this protocol. In fact, the SIIG ProHD is the only cable on our list which isn’t HDCP certified. This may cause viewing problems when connecting to devices such as Blu-ray players or HDTVs which do have certification, so check your electronics before purchasing this HDMI cable.

However, this cable does have 24-karat gold-plated connectors and is RoHS compliant. It also includes a hardy braided cord for increased durability.

The SIIG ProHD is the most expensive option on this list, and if you’re in the market for a simple cable, this may not be the choice for you. It does come with a lifetime warranty, however, so you’ll only have to make your purchase once. If you don’t mind shelling out some extra cash for superior quality, this cable can be an excellent investment.

  • COMPATIBLE ACROSS ALL FORMATS! Why run a dozen different cords and connectors across your entertainment system when one...
  • LIFETIME WARRANTY! Rest easy with our limited lifetime guarantee. If you aren't satisfied in any way, contact us and we...

This cable has only one length, so if six feet of cord doesn’t work for your set up, you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you can make do, this cable has some excellent points in its favor.

The Solid Cordz HDMI 2.0 hits several quality points: connectors plated in 24-karat gold, RoHS compliance and a lifetime warranty. While the cord looks like braided nylon upon first glance, it’s actually made of mesh netting. This creates a cable that is the best of both worlds: durable like a braided cord and flexible like traditional plastic.

The price is higher than most on this list, especially for the length. However, this particular cable is sold in a pack of two and comes with right angle adapters, meaning you essentially get four cables for this price.

dCables Hi-Speed HDMI Cable - 3D Ready - 4K Resolution Support,...
  • Supports all new HDMI features such as 3D, Audio Return Channel, Ethernet, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master AudioTM
  • Resolutions: 4k, 1440p, 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480i
  • Supports 120 Hz, 240 Hz & 360Hz refresh rates

While this HDMI cable only comes in one length, it’s an incredible value for the price. It has 24-karat gold-plated connectors and meets RoHS compliance standards. Though the cord is traditional plastic, the dCables High-Speed HDMI also comes with a lifetime warranty in case of damage.

It has the same high quality as the cables above, but for a fraction of the price (with the exception of the Monoprice Select). Its greatest drawbacks are the inconvenience of length at 6.6 feet and the less-durable plastic cord. However, if you’re in need of a cheap option that doesn’t sacrifice visual and audio quality, the dCables High-Speed HMDI may be a perfect choice.

Mediabridge Ultra offers a wide variety of cable length, so you can choose one that’s just right. However, it doesn’t meet RoHS compliance standards. If you’re concerned about the environmental effect of using hazardous materials during production, or if you want a guarantee that your electronic product doesn’t contain hazardous materials, other options on this list can meet that need.

This particular cable lacks a braided cord, and though it comes with a warranty, it’s lifetime limited. That means only manufacturer defects are covered. If your cord breaks or you experience a short due to use, you’re out of luck.

Despite missing a few perks, the Mediabridge Ultra does have a few points in its favor. Technical support is offered by the company through several avenues, including email, phone and live chat. The Mediabridge Ultra also comes in longer cables up to 25 feet. With the exorbitant prices of most long cords, this HDMI cable is a steal.

Cmple - 4K Gold Plated Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable - HDTV Cable with...
  • HDMI 2.0 CABLE: Connects a computer, DVD/Blu-Ray Player, AV receiver, Fire TV, Roku Premier, Media Player, Cable box,...
  • PERFORMANCE: Get Vivid Colors and Ultra High-Resolution Video: Providing you with transfer rates up to 18 Gbps. Support...
  • PREMIUM QUALITY: Delivers high-definition video and lossless multichannel digital audio at the same time. Gold-plated...

The Cmple Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable has three cable lengths from which to choose. While it lacks a braided cord and 24-karat gold plating, it does meet RoHS compliance standards while offering a longer cord option at 15 feet.

Unlike our higher-scored options, Cmple doesn’t have oxygen-free copper in its internal structure, which means its wiring isn’t as resistant to damage-causing corrosion. It does come with a 30-day warranty, so be sure to use your cable as soon as you get it to detect any flaws or defects. This company also offers some customer support by phone and email. Though not the most dazzling on this list, the Cmple Ultra High Speed is a simple option that gets the job done.

AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable, 6 Feet, 2-Pack
  • HDMI A Male to A Male Cable: Supports Ethernet, 3D, 4K video and Audio Return Channel (ARC)
  • Connects Blu-ray players, Fire TV, Apple TV, PS4, PS3, XBox one, Xbox 360, computers and other HDMI-enabled devices to...
  • Cable allows you to share an Internet connection among multiple devices without the need for a separate Ethernet cable

This option is actually one of the best-selling HDMI cables, likely because of the wide selection (including longer cables up to 15 feet), lifetime warranty and low price. As the product of a large online company, the AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI is also easy to find and purchase on the web.

On the downside, this cable lacks 24-karat gold in its connector plating, has a plastic cord and isn’t RoHS compliant. There is also no AWG rating listed on the product information. The majority of the other cables listed are rated 28 AWG, which is fairly standard for HDMI cables 25 feet or shorter and works effectively for most set ups. The lack of a rating here could mean lower quality data transfer, but the customer reviews indicate most buyers are happy with their purchase. If you’re looking for something cheap and functional, AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI is a good choice.

Monster HDMI 1000HD Ultimate High Speed (HDMI Cable with Ethernet) (2...
  • Ultimate high performance cable with a bandwidth of greater than 17.8 Gbps
  • "Cable For Life" performance guarantee
  • For those who demand the best in high definition home theater - now and in the future

Of all the cables listed, the Monster 1000HD Ultimate High-Speed certainly has the most impressive name. At first glance, it may seem to be a weaker contestant, with only two length options, no RoHS compliance and no mention of wire gauge or warranty.

However, the Monster 1000HD Ultimate High Speed’s strength lies on the inside. The cable is incredibly durable and contains a sheath fashioned in a double helix. The cable also contains an insulator injected with nitrogen gas that prevents contact between the sheath and copper conductors, thereby maintaining a clearer signal. With this kind of technology and the option for a 25-foot cable, the slightly higher price is understandable.

BJC Series-FE Bonded-Pair High-Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, 6 foot,...
  • 6 foot High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet in black PVC jacket, gold-plated HDMI connectors
  • Cable drawn, extruded, shielded, cabled and jacketed in Kentucky and Indiana; connectorized in China
  • Certified High Speed (Category 2) to the longest length of any 28 AWG HDMI cable on the market

Blue Jeans Cable High-Speed HDMI ranks lower on this list due to two length options and it’s relatively high price. While not RoHS compliant, it does come with 24-karat gold connectors and a 30-day warranty.

This cable’s best features are in its production. All components of this HDMI cable are manufactured in the United States, so if you’re looking to buy American, this is a great option. The cable also utilizes a technology called Belden Bonded-Pair to increase signal stability by bonding the wire insulator on two wires. The added consistency may be worth the extra money.

AudioQuest Pearl 1m (3.28 feet) Black/White HDMI Digital Audio/Video...
  • Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) Conductors
  • Gold Plated cold-weld HDMI Connectors
  • Low Jitter, Low Distortion Audio

The AudioQuest Pearl is number 10 because it lacks the 24-karat gold plating one would expect from its high price in addition to the lack of an AWG rating on its product information. However, it is RoHS certified and comes with a 5-year warranty, which is decent, if not as impressive as the lifetime warranties boasted by several products on this list.

AudioQuest does offer customer support by phone, email and live chat. Their website contains an FAQ page with helpful information. While the product itself is fair, the service that accompanies it may be worth the cost.

Our Top Pick

Our stand-out choice was the Monoprice Select. It checked all our boxes when it came to quality while offering a wide selection of lengths. The prices are affordable, and a lifetime warranty is always a plus. While the other options are great for meeting specific needs, the Monoprice Select is well-rounded for the average customer.

Best Verizon Tablets: The Ultimate Tablet Guide

Modern businessman holding a verizon tablet

Electronic tablets have become an integral part of many work and home lives. For the most part, they are reasonably priced and come in sizes appropriate for every age group. This post will help you if you are in the market for a Verizon tablet. Sizes range from eight to 12 inches with available memory ranging from 16 to 256 GB. Each tablet features a minimum of a 5 MP rear camera, though some models have up to a 13 MP device.

The reason you may want to consider a tablet connected to a cell plan is so that you have internet access everywhere that you have cellular service. This is especially important for business people or those in sales that are traveling to meet with clients. Internet service makes it possible to connect with pertinent company files or to process transactions if needed.

The Verdict

Man Holding a Digital Black Tablet and Beside him is his phone and a cup of coffee

Image by Karolina Grabowska from Pixabay

Most tablets are very similar in use and operation, so the final deciding factor will be in how you want to use the device. Some games and applications take up considerable memory, so a large internal memory may be warranted. If you need a tablet for data entry or sales purposes, you may want one with a keyboard. On the other hand, if taking pictures is your priority, you’ll want a higher resolution camera option.

We put the HP Elite X2 in the number one spot because of the large memory capacity, the big screen and the included keyboard. While it’s a little more pricey and heavier than some other models, it has the user options to back up the price tag.

For a second option, we really liked the Apple iPad Pro. It has considerably less standard memory but can be increased with external memory. It also doesn’t have a keyboard included, but its camera has more than twice the megapixels as the Elite X2.

Again, the final choice has to revolve around how the tablet will be used and whom will be using it. The best thing about choosing a Verizon tablet is that it can be added to an existing cellular phone plan or be used to start a new plan. The beauty of having a tablet on a phone plan is that you can have internet access anywhere you have phone service. Streaming videos and gameplay never have to stop, depending, of course, on your data plan.

Best Amazon Fire Tablets: The Ultimate Tablet Guide

Amazon’s entries into the world of consumer devices have encompassed both huge hits – their Kindle e-readers – and gigantic misses – the Amazon Fire phone. Their Amazon Fire tablets, though, hit somewhere in between. While they lack the power, speed, and customization of their iOS and Android counterparts, the Fire tablets are nearly perfect media streaming devices at a shockingly low price point. If you only plan on using a tablet for watching Amazon Prime video (or Netflix, HBO Go, and Hulu) and already have a personal relationship with Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, it’s hard to go wrong with an Amazon Fire tablet.

Comparison Table

Getting To Know the Amazon Fire

fire hd 8 tablet

Image via Amazon

Perhaps the cheapest functional tablet on the market, the Amazon Fire comes in three screen sizes, with each screen size paired with two possible internal memory sizes. Their latest models also allow for expanded memory, up to 256 GB, through the use of a microSD card slot. The addition of expandable memory makes the lowest possible internal storage size the best value at each screen size.

How Does the Amazon Fire Compare To Similarly Sized iPads or Android tablets?

fire hd 8 tablets with alexa

Image via Amazon

There’s no doubt that when it comes to computing horsepower, screen resolution, or even the number of available accessories, the Amazon Fire is outclassed by most of its competitors. However, as we keep hinting at, the Fire is a perfectly acceptable media streaming device at an outrageously low price.

For example, the cheapest iPad comes in at around $330. For that price, you could buy six of the most inexpensive Amazon tablets (the Fire 7), with an extra $30 leftover for apps and accessories. In fact, even the most expensive Amazon tablet (the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition) comes in at $130 cheaper than the cheapest iPad model.

So, what exactly is lost, then, in buying a Fire tablet? Well, Amazon’s devices use a modified version of Android’s operating system to power their units. As Amazon and Android’s parent companies are not getting along right now, unfortunately, you will not get access to most Google apps on Amazon, including Gmail, YouTube, and Google Docs. While you can access these websites, you won’t have access to the app. (Meaning, you can go to youtube.com and browse and play videos, but you cannot download the standalone YouTube app).

While there are ways to get around those app restrictions, you do so at your own risk of freezing or bricking your Amazon device. If you’re comfortable with and knowledgeable of terms like sideloading and rooting, you should be able to turn a Fire tablet into a standard Android one.

What Are the Kids Editions?

different colors of amazon fire hd 8 for kids

Image via Amazon

The Kids Editions take the baseline Fire tablet models and add some nifty features to help parents monitor their children's activity on the device. They also come with plenty of product protections. For only $50 more at each screen size level, the benefits are worth it:

  • A free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a subscription service consisting of 15,000 apps, books, games, movies, and television shows that are appropriate for children aged three to 12.
  • Additional parental controls, like screen time limits and prompts to use educational apps before playing games.
  • Included kid-proof case.
  • Two-year full warranty (as opposed to the 90-day limited warranty of regular Fire tablets).

What’s the Price Range?

While the range of customization here (e.g., screen size, internal storage size, and advertising), doesn't necessarily make pricing easily, there's no doubt that these tablets represent some of the best values in the market:

  • Fire 7: $49.99 (8 GB) or $69.99 (16 GB)
  • Fire 8 HD: $79.99 (16 GB) or $89.99 (32 GB)
  • Fire 10 HD: $149.99 (32 GB) or $189.99 (64 GB)

The Kids Edition tablets cost $50 more and are only available with the highest internal storage option at each screen size (so, the Fire 7 Kids Edition comes with 16 GB).

Amazon offers the ability to select whether you'd like to include "special offers" when purchasing a Fire or Kindle. By selecting this option, you'll receive personalized advertising as your screen saver or at the bottom of your screen when browsing books, and in exchange, you'll receive a slight discount. (The prices listed above are with the special offers option turned on). If you'd prefer not to have these ads, you should expect to pay $15 more for each Fire tablet variety.

How We Reviewed

To ensure a well-rounded approach when examining each Amazon Fire tablet, we compiled reviews from individuals and websites, then compared them to our personal experiences. Now, as stated earlier, there's no doubt the iPad is more powerful and has a better display than the Fire HD 8, but that doesn't mean you should knock the feature set of Amazon's tablets:

  • 12 hours of battery life
  • Alexa-enabled
  • High-def, eight-inch display (1280 x 800 screen resolution)
  • Free month of Amazon Prime (if you aren't already a subscriber)
  • Front- and rear-facing camera, the former capable of shooting in 720p
  • MicroSD card slot capable of up to 256 GB of additional storage

Amazon developed a new feature within the past couple of months that makes the Fire 8 HD an even better value. For an additional $40 you can purchase the Show Mode charging dock, which turns the tablet into something akin to their Echo Show smart display. The dock also charges the device and enables a full-screen mode, so the screen is visible even from across the room.

This new feature makes the Fire 8 HD a perfect bedside table or kitchen accessory, capable of handling HD video, wake up alarms, and recipe recitation with intuitive ease. The dock is only available for this model of Fire tablet.

Since the Kids Edition Fire tablets are not all too different from their baseline counterparts, choosing the best tablet for your kid is mostly a matter of picking the best Fire tablet. In this case, that means going with the Fire 8 Kids Edition.

With this selection, you’ll get all the same significant benefits and specifications as the standard Fire 8 HD tablet, as well as a practically indestructible case, a two-year warranty that’s well above industry standard, and some added protection to make sure your kids aren’t spending too much time on their tablet.

It should be noted, that the Kids Edition is not compatible with Amazon’s new Show Mode charging dock, as none of the child-focused tablets include Alexa. So, if you’re looking for a smart display for your kid, the baseline Fire 8 HD edition is still the way to go.

Considering what a fantastic deal the Fire 8 HD is, it's hard to imagine Amazon offering an even less expensive tablet.

The big difference is performance and screen quality. While the Fire 8 HD offers eight inches of high-def screen, the Fire 7 operates with less RAM and a non-HD screen. This means the display will not be as crisp as you would hope, and you will suffer through some frozen screens and stuttering video.

Still, if you're not tasking it with memory-intensive apps, or if you're looking to purchase a child their first tablet, the Fire 7 makes much sense as an option.

We started off the review of the Fire 8 HD by saying that it would have to cost twice as much not to be considered a value.

While the screen is larger and the processor a tick faster than the smaller model, you also lose two hours of battery life. Otherwise, the specs are pretty similar. Due to the not-quite-doubling of the Fire 8 HD's price, the Fire 10 HD should be passed over, unless you absolutely require a 10-inch screen.

Concluding Thoughts

There is no doubt that, regardless of screen size or amount of internal memory, the Amazon Fire tablet is one of the best deals in the gadget market. For under $100, you can get one of two fully functional media streaming devices. For slightly more, you can get a bigger and better screen. While we prefer the Fire 8 HD model, it’s tough to go wrong with either the Fire 7 or Fire 10 HD, depending on your preferences.

Amazon’s addition of the Show Mode charging doc nudges the Fire 8 HD as the best overall model, as it can transform the device to something similar to Amazon’s Echo Show or other similar smart displays. Park it on your bedside table or the kitchen counter, and this device can stream video, set alarms, play music and podcasts, and even recite recipes.

If you have kids, Amazon’s child offerings are difficult to beat as well. Sure, the $50 increase means that the Fire 7 model’s price doubles, but the included case and extended warranty are worth it. Even still, the Fire 10 HD Kids Edition costs $130 less than the cheapest iPad model, which does not come with the screen time and device protections that Amazon’s tablets include.

If you need the best screen or the fastest processor, then these Fire tablets may not be for you. You won’t be able to edit videos, watch videos in 4k resolution or have access to the broadest range of iOS or Android apps. However, if your day-to-day tablet use consists of streaming videos or music, and you’re already part of the Amazon ecosystem, the Fire tablets are tough to beat.

8 Inch Tablet – The Best Models and Brands to Look For Today

man with tablet

8-inch tablets, due to their portable size and lower cost, help bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops. These handheld devices do everything that a 10-inch tablet does, but sometimes at half the price. They represent excellent value, gorgeous screen resolutions, and the necessary processing power to stream media and, maybe, even create some yourself, too.

How We Reviewed Each Tablet

We reviewed each device by attempting to be as comprehensive and well-rounded as possible. This means we read almost as many online reviews as possible, both from major consumer review websites, as well as individual customer reviews.

We did this to remove any potential bias from any single review and collect as many data points as possible. This allowed us to come at each device objectively and provide the most useful and accurate information as possible.

Breaking Down 8-Inch Tablets

Apple iPad mini 4

Apple iPad mini 4 (Wi-Fi, 128GB) - Space Gray
  • 7.9-inch Retina display with antireflective coating
  • A8 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture
  • Touch ID fingerprint sensor

Pound for pound, or pixel for pixel, the best screen on this list is the iPad Mini 4, the leviathan of the tiny tablet market. Its operating system is intuitive. Its app selection is extensive, even if some of the default apps aren’t the greatest. On top of all this, if you already have an iPhone or MacBook, syncing everything through iCloud is a breeze.

The powerful A8 chip brings 1.5 GHz of processing power, one of the most powerful ones reviewed. This means of all the tablets listed here, the iPad Mini is probably the best one for work or productivity tasks, especially when connected to one of Apple’s wireless keyboard accessory.

iPads have severely cornered the tablet market, so it’s hard, but not impossible, to come up with any flaws. These devices are expensive, costing nearly five times as much as our value pick, the Amazon Fire HD 8. Further, while the 128 GB of internal storage is the most of any device listed, the lack of microSD card slot means the other tablets with one can easily surge ahead of it, storage-wise.

All-New Fire HD 8 Tablet

Fire HD 8 Tablet (8" HD Display, 16 GB, with Special Offers) - Black
  • 8" HD display; 16 or 32 GB of internal storage (up to 400 GB with microSD)
  • 1.3 GHz quad-core processor
  • Up to 10 hours of battery life

The 16 GB Amazon Fire HD 8 (with personalized screensaver advertisements) costs only $70 - $100. It won’t compare to the iPad when it comes to either screen quality or processing power, but with a microSD card slot that can increase the internal storage by another 256 GB and a capable screen, the Fire HD 8 would have to cost as much as an iPad mini not to be a good deal. If you can cab a Fire HD 8 during one of Amazon’s many sales, you may be able to pick up a great streaming device for only $40 - $60.

Recently, Amazon developed a new feature that turns this tablet into a something more like a smart display. Perfect for a bedside table or kitchen countertop, the Show Mode charging doc, along with Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, adds even more value.

Huawei Mediapad T3

Huawei Mediapad T3 8" 2+16 Quad-Core 1.4GHz, Android N + EMUI 5.1
  • A 4800 mAh battery delivers long-lasting enjoyment, even with heavy use
  • Rear camera: 5 MP and auto focus, Front camera: 2 MP and fixed focus
  • Made from a solid piece of sleek anodized aluminum with a tastefully polished metallic finish

Capable of running for up 17 hours on a full charge, the Huawei MediaPad T3 8 is the longest lasting device reviewed. In fact, just a 30-minute charge will allow it run for 2.5 hours, again the best of all tablets listed here.

Screen-wise, this device sits closer to our value pick than our best pick, so its $250 price point seems high in comparison. Luckily, the screen has some pretty generous viewing angles, so it’s a great device for sharing a mediocre picture with a friend or two.

Set at 16 GB of internal storage, the MediaPad is another device with an expandable MicroSD card slot, allowing for additional memory capacity. Combined with the extended battery life, the ability to add storage makes this device perfect for long car rides or airplane trips.

Lenovo Tab 4 Plus

Lenovo Tab 4 Plus, 8" Android Tablet, 64-bit Octa-Core Snapdragon,...
  • THEATER-LIKE MULTIMEDIA: 8-inch tablet has a brilliant FHD display with booming Dolby Atmos Audio and built-in...
  • TABLET FOR KIDS: Transform to a kids tablet with Lenovo Kid's Pack, including a shock-resistant bumper, blue-light...
  • MULTI-ACCOUNT: With multi-user and multi-space functionality, use the enhanced security fingerprint scanning technology...

The Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus is a solid device that comes with a good screen that sits slightly below the best available in this price range. Its 1920 x 1080 resolution and 249 pixels per inch doesn’t quite match up with the iPad Mini 4, or even the Asus ZenPad S, but it exceeds that of the Fire HD 8.

Besides its excellent display, the Lenovo tablet comes in a variety of internal storage size options, from 16 to 64 GB, with the possibility of additional storage through a microSD card slot. The 64 GB version also adds a robust 2.0 GHz processor, but the smaller sizes come with a decent 1.4 GHz one.

The battery power sits right in the middle of the pack, averaging about 11 hours of use on a full charge, slightly less than the iPad and Amazon tablets. On 30 minutes of charge, you’ll get around 2.5 hours of use.

You’ll also get the ability to multitask and display two apps at once. While that is an advantage when compared to other 8-inch tablets, this feature works better on a bigger screen or a device built for productivity.

ASUS ZenPad S8

ASUS ZenPad S8 8" (2048x1536) 32GB Black Tablet - Z580C-B1-BK
  • 8" IPS Display (2048 x 1536) with ASUS TruVivid technology for better visual experience
  • Intel Atom Z3530 Quad-Core, 64bit, 1.3GHz
  • 2GB RAM, 32GB Onboard Storage

Battling with the iPad Mini 4 for the best screen on an 8-inch display, the Asus ZenPad S 8.0 suffers for its short battery life – only 9 hours, on average – and a design that’s somewhat lacking. With a thin trim on each side of the device, it’s difficult to hold in one hand without accidentally activating the touchscreen with your thumb.

Still, this Asus tablet comes with the fastest CPU of all the reviewed models, clocking in at 2.33 GHz. Only the 64 GB Lenovo tablet comes close at 2.0 GHz. The iPad’s 1.5 GHz processor is almost 33 percent less potent than Asus’.

The 9-hour battery life hurts, in any case. It’s the only reviewed tablet unable to hit double digits. That makes sense with the bright screen and powerful processor, but it would be nice to use the nice features for longer.

The ZenPad is also reasonably priced, starting at around $115 - $150, depending on your internal storage size selection. If it weren’t for the battery life issue, this would’ve easily knocked the Fire HD 8 off the best value pedestal.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 8.0" 16GB, 3GB RAM (WiFi + Cellular)...
  • 8" inch, LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 800 x 1280 pixels
  • Network Compatibility : 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and/or 3G 900(B8) / 850(B5) / 1700|2100(B4) / 1900(B2) / 2100(B1)...
  • 16GB Storage, 3GB RAM, 256GB microSD Card slot

For around $400 and an average screen, processor, and battery life, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 doesn’t come close to sniffing the top spot. The battery, while topping out at just under 11 hours of use with a full charge, takes a while to get going. After 30 minutes of charge, you’ll only get an equal amount of use out of it, as opposed to other reviewed devices that easily clear 2 hours of use after half an hour of charging.

The price is the main off-putting metric here. For similar specifications, you can spend about $320 fewer dollars and get the Fire HD 8.

Acer Iconia One 8

Acer Iconia One 8 B1-810-11TV 8-Inch HD Tablet
  • Android 4.4 KitKat, 8 inches Display
  • Intel Atom Z3735G Quad-Core Processor (1.33 GHz)
  • 16 GB Flash Memory, 1 GB RAM Memory

Cheap, but with a processor that stutters and stammers its way through applications, the Acer Iconia One 8 offers an inexpensive device with features and specifications to match. Outside of the CPU, there’s nothing necessarily bad about this device, but it lacks the intuitiveness and added benefits of the similarly priced Fire HD 8.

Final Thoughts

If you count the 10 Commandments, tablets have been with humanity since the dawn of time. Still, the lack of touchscreen display and poor processing power of those relics pale in comparison to the modern day offering of 8-inch smart devices.

The king of the mini tablet jungle remains the iPad Mini 4. Its screen is top-notch, and Apple’s operating system remains heads and shoulders above Android’s and Amazon’s OS. If you have the money to spare, this is your best bet.

If you’re looking for value, it’s extremely tough to beat the Fire HD 8, especially if you’re looking for something more akin to a smart display than a traditional tablet. If you’re already locked into Amazon’s ecosystem, this is the tablet for you.

Regarding battery power, nothing beats Huawei’s MediaPad. Lasting up to 17 hours on a full charge, this tablet can stay powered on for almost 50 percent longer than its closest competitor can. Unfortunately, the display and processing power are mediocre, meaning that extra time isn’t spent with a fantastic device.

The Lenovo Tab 4 and the Asus ZenPad are worthy competitors to the top spot due to their above average and fantastic displays, respectively. However, they fall short when it comes to price and battery life, also respectively.

All in all, there is a robust assortment of 8-inch tablets out there. Choosing the best one truly comes down to a matter of preference.

How We Chose These Tablets

Whether it’s your first tablet purchase or you’re an avid tablet user, there’s plenty of factors to consider when choosing the best tablet. We picked these 7-inch tablets because of their customer ratings, professional reviews, affordable price, and of course, screen size. All but the iPad Mini 4 have a 7-inch screen, while the iPad has a 7.9-inch screen. All of these tablets are excellent choices for different reasons, so use this list to choose the best tablet to fit your personal preferences.

Price Range

Just like any other computer device, there’s a broad range of prices when it comes to tablets. These are some of the most inexpensive tablets on the market, but you can easily spend over $2,000 on a premium, large tablet.

The Tab 7 Essential by Lenovo doesn’t have any particularly impressive or innovative features. It only has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and the resolution and camera quality are also lacking. However, what it lacks in premium features it makes up for with a reliably inexpensive tablet. It isn’t the cheapest tablet on the market, but it’s certainly one of the top five. With the Lenovo brand to back it up, it’s more reliable than other inexpensive tablets, like the RCA Voyager III. The Tab 7 Essential uses Android, so you won’t have to deal with the same lack of apps and browsers that the Amazon Fire 7 has.

RCA Voyager III RCA 7 16GB Tablet Andriod
  • Android 6.0 tablet, Marshmallow 1.3GHz quad-core processor
  • 16GB storage 7" touchscreen Battery life up to 6 hrs
  • 1024 x 600 front and rear facing 2MP camera compatible with Google Play

If you are looking for pure savings and nothing else, the Voyager III is a great option. A quick look at the specifications makes it seem competitive with the Lenovo Tab 7 Essential and the Amazon Fire 7. Even better, it’s the most inexpensive tablet on the list. While this 7-inch tablet comes with Android and 8GB of storage, it performs very poorly in nearly every other category. This tablet is made of plastic and has a cheap, outdated feel to it. While it may perform well for a kid’s tablet or a device for reading books, there isn’t enough storage, resolution, or speaker quality to be used effectively for most other tasks. If you are looking for an inexpensive tablet, consider the Amazon Fire 7 or the Lenovo Tab 7 Essential for a better-quality choice.

Fire 7 Tablet (7" display, 8 GB, with Special Offers) - Black
  • 7" IPS display; 8 or 16 GB of internal storage (up to 256 GB with microSD)
  • 1.3 GHz quad-core processor
  • Up to 8 hours of battery life

Fire 7 is one of the most affordable 7-inch tablets on the market. Enjoy the lightweight and durable design of this tablet while you stream music, read books, watch movies, or talk to Alexa, the voice-operated feature of most Amazon devices. If you have other smart devices, you can use Alexa to communicate with your TV, thermostat, or any other smart device in your house. This tablet uses the Fire operating system. It’s easy to use and offers plenty of features, but doesn’t offer the full Android Play Store or additional browsers. You can only search the internet with Silk, Amazon’s web browser. The battery life is very reasonable, with an estimated 8 hours of life. However, with only 8GB of storage, 1GB of RAM and low resolution, the Fire 7 isn’t a great choice for high-quality music and movies.

Apple iPad mini 4 (Wi-Fi, 128GB) - Gold
  • 7.9-inch Retina display with antireflective coating
  • A8 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture
  • Touch ID fingerprint sensor

The most professional and high-end 7-inch tablet offers plenty of RAM, excellent resolution, and an impressive amount of storage space. While it’s technically 7.9 inches, the screen boasts some of the best resolution of this category. Choose multiple storage capacity options, with 128GB being the highest amount available. The eight-megapixel camera offers excellent photos, and the front-facing camera is great for video calls. While this tablet is the most expensive option by far, it offers the best portable features for high-end movie, music, and gaming interactions. It uses iOS, which can be quite different than the Android operating system. If you already own Apple products, you’ll enjoy the user interface. Otherwise, it might be difficult to adjust to a different operating system.

Whether you are looking for a little more RAM, resolution, or a great price, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7-inch tablet is an excellent choice for a mid-range tablet. The extra RAM allows it to watch movies or search the internet faster, and the higher resolution gives you a much clearer image than the Amazon Fire 7 or other budget tablets. However, 8GB of storage space means you’ll still want to look for a microSD card or other storage solution. This tablet has a child mode, so you’ll be able to easily create an account for the children in your family. With a children’s account, there are additional safety features to prevent them from viewing material or making purchases without your knowledge. Like all the tablets on the list, the Galaxy Tab A comes with front and rear cameras. However, the rear camera only has five megapixels, which is lower than more premium tablets and smartphones.

ASUS Zenpad 7" (1024X600) 16GB Black Tablet - Z170C-A1-BK
  • 7" IPS Display (1024 x 600) with ASUS TruVivid technology for better visual experience
  • Intel Atom x3-C3200 Quad-Core, 64bit, 1.2GHz
  • 1G RAM, 16G Onboard Storage, Bluetooth 4.0

The ZenPad C 7.0 has many of the same specifications as the Galaxy Tab A 7-inch tablet but offers a lower-resolution screen and a lower price. If you need a tablet that performs basic functions but still comes from a trusted brand, the ZenPad C 7.0 is a great choice. It’s more sturdy than the Lenovo Tab 7 Essential but may not offer enough advantages to consider the additional price. Eight GB of storage isn’t very impressive for this price, either. Altogether, it’s a reasonably reliable tablet that will perform all your basic functions in a portable package but is more expensive than similar tablets.

The Verdict

Now that you’ve read all the FAQs and compared each bestselling 7-inch tablet, you have all the information you need to choose the best tablet for your needs. If you are looking for an inexpensive and durable device to read books and search the web, consider the Amazon Fire 7. For a high-end tablet with plenty of storage space, look for the iPad Mini 4. Be sure to select the right storage capacity for your need, as this tablet can also come with only 16GB of storage. There are plenty of 7-inch tablets on the market, and many different reasons for choosing each one. Consider the features that are most important for you before you purchase a tablet. Not all tablets are built the same, so be sure to choose a tablet that offers the resolution, RAM, and storage capacity you need. Once you find the perfect 7-inch tablet, you’ll have the perfect device for highly portable and cost-effective apps, games, music, and the web.
