Finding the Best OLED TV in 2019: Tips for Making the Right Choice

An OLED TV

You're in the market for a new television, and you've heard this new term that has you curious: OLED. Certainly, OLED televisions have been around a long time. But the amount of conversation has intensified. So you're wondering: What is the best OLED TV?

It turns out that it's not the easiest question to answer. As television technology has converted from standard, boring plasma to LCD to LED to OLED, the number of factors for you to consider has mushroomed.

It's essential to keep in mind what OLED is -- and not necessarily because it's automatically the right choice for you. You just want to make sure you're getting what the high price tag promises.

No matter which technology you fall in love with, we'll be around to help. You can check back often at our best television page to see our latest offerings.

What Is OLED?

OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. It's the light-emitting part that makes it significant. The materials that make up OLED TVs emit light when connected to an electrical charge.

The emissive quality of the organic compounds changes everything in terms of display. What it means is that displays no longer need to have backlights as they do in traditional LED/LCD displays.

Removing the need for backlights makes it possible for manufacturers to produce televisions at unbelievably thin sizes -- in some instances, not much more than a tenth of an inch.

OLED TVs are also stunning to watch because they produce brighter, more realistic colors and deeper blacks -- so lifelike that you almost think you're glancing through the looking glass. The design also enables a consistent viewing experience at virtually any angle. Fill your theater room, and everyone can see!

Surprisingly, researchers at Eastman Kodak -- the former photo giant -- discovered modern OLED technology. Since then, development in OLED has shifted to Asia

What to Look for in an OLED TV

Shopping for an OLED television is no different than shopping for any other TV. But it's a lot different than it used to be. You need to be at least knowledgeable about the number of highly technical terms that await you.

Probably the primary consideration, as always, is going to be your budget. The best OLED TV doesn't come cheap. Expect to dig deep into your wallet.

Your other significant decision point will be the size. OLED technology has enabled manufacturers to go wild, with screens approaching 100 inches.

As for what you came here for: the picture. OLED televisions almost universally produce images at 4K resolution. The market is starting to shift to 8K resolution, which almost hard to believe.

One other factor to keep in mind as you seek the best OLED TV -- the relative extent and ease of use of the TV’s “smart” functionality. In the streaming age, you don’t want any obstacles between you and your Disney+ or Apple+.

How We Reviewed

Much as been written about the best OLED TV. And, undoubtedly, much will continue to be written. The technology is continuing to evolve in ways that are unexpected and exciting.

To compile our list of top OLED TVs, we consulted several sources -- some in the industry and some looking to help you, the consumer, such as Consumer Reports.

The manufacturers themselves are among the best sources for OLED TV advice. So we studied what LG, Sony, and Samsung had to say, both about the technology as well as their offerings. Those three companies are the leading makers of OLED. (Although, more on Samsung's approach later.)

To round out our work, we considered customer reviews on sites such as Amazon.

Product Comparison Table

The Best OLED TVs of 2019

The field for OLED TVs is expanding. The leading player for many years was LG, as the primary manufacturer of OLED panels. LG has begun making panels for other companies on an OEM basis. So you now see competing sets from that company, as well as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Grundig, and others.

We focused on the OLED televisions that are within your grasp and separated them by the manufacturer. Some differences are very slight, and you may well get confused if you follow along with product numbers.

LG OLED TVs

You won't get far in shopping for your OLED television before encountering LG, which has made the most significant investment in OLED. The company offers the broadest line from entry-level through to the most advanced TV technology you can find anywhere.

Differentiating these TVs in the market may be somewhat challenging. We'll do our best to set them apart, but know that the answer won't necessarily come only in examining specifications side by side.

Let's start by pointing to the commonalities across the models. LG OLED TVs all:

  • Use LG’s Alpha Gen 2 Intelligent Processor, which gives your TV its smarts -- though there are some differences in version year.
  • Broadcast images in 4K with high dynamic range. HDR plays a role in the quality of the images you see.
  • Broadcast sound in Dolby Atmos audio, which is a technology that provides a surround-sound experience in your home.
  • Include personal digital assistants, with specific compatibility geared toward Amazon and Google.
  • Provide artificial intelligence/machine learning technology from LG known as LG ThinQ. These applications learn what you like and adjust accordingly.
  • Include the same product identifier. In 2019, that designator is “PUA.”

We’ll now dig a little deeper into what makes the various LG OLED TVs unique from each other.

1. LG OLED B9 TV

LG OLED65B9PUA B9 Series 65" 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV (2019)
  • Your purchase includes One LG B9 Series 65" 4K UHD Smart OLED TV, 2019 model, one Magic remote with batteries, one power...
  • TV Dimensions: Without Stand – 57" W x 32.7" H x 1.8" D | With Stand – 57" W x 34.2" H x 9.7" D
  • Other specifications: Power Supply (Voltage, Hz) – AC 120V, 50/60Hz | Standby Power Consumption – Under 0.5W | Power...

The B9 is considered LG's "entry-level" OLED TV. It is built differently to deliver a slightly lower price tag and broaden the adoption of OLED technology.

The distinguishing factor: The television uses an earlier generation of the LG Intelligent Processor. OLED B9 TVs use the Alpha 7 processor versus the Alpha 9 for the competing models. The processor plays a vital role in the image you see on the screen.

It remains to be seen how much better the Alpha 9 performs -- for the average viewer; the differences could be hard to notice. (Unless you're into terms such as "dynamic tone mapping.")

As a choice for best OLED TV, the LG B9 is available in either 55 inches, 65 inches or 77 inches.

Pros

  • Price
  • Sturdy TV stand
  • Easy integration to other devices

Cons

  • Lower-quality sound
  • Some complaints of image burn-in
  • Earlier generation of processor

2. LG OLED TV C9

  • Advanced image and sound technologies inspired by the cinema optimize picture and sound for a spectacular, more lifelike...

The LG OLED TV C9 gets a spot as a candidate for best OLED TV as the company's flagship model. Once again, the primary technical specs remain the same: 4K resolution, Alpha 2 Image Processor, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos sound, and an HDMI 2.1 port.

The differences lie in aesthetic and sound. The LG C9 does not have a built-in soundbar and puts out a maximum of 40 watts of sound. (For comparison, the LG E9 does include a soundbar and puts out 60 watts of sound.) The lesser spec could well be OK if you're someone who already has a revved-up sound system in your home.

The C9 also comes with a traditional stand, whereas some of the other LG models are built just to hang on the wall. You can choose from 3 sizes for the C9 -- 55, 65, and 77 inches.

Pros

  • Traditional stand
  • High-class feel
  • Easy remote

Cons

  • No soundbar
  • Less powerful sound output
  • Extremely thin -- you’ll worry it’s fragile

3. LG OLED E9 TV

  • Your purchase includes One LG E9 Series 65-Inch TV, One Magic control with batteries, One power cable, and User manual

  • Connectivity: HDMI – 4 | USB – 2 | Bluetooth Support Version – 5.0 | Wi-Fi Standard – Wi-Fi Certified 802.11ac

From the C line, LG steps it up into a premium design with the OLED E9. Once again, the similarities are consistent. You'll get 4K resolution, the Alpha 2 image processor, high-dynamic range, artificial intelligence capabilities, and Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. You'll get built-in personal digital assistance from Google.

The most significant difference lies in the design. The LG OLED E9 panel is set on a piece of glass, which gives a different viewing experience than almost any other TV. Reviewers say it seems like the images are floating on air.

In contrast to the LG OLED C9, this television includes a soundbar and produces volume powered by 60 watts. Size-wise, you're limited to only 55 inches and 65 inches.

Pros

  • Outstanding design -- images seem like they are floating
  • Sound performance -- 60-watt output
  • Picture quality

Cons

  • TV runs hot
  • Some complaints of image burn-in

4. LG OLED W9 TV

  • LG a9 GEN 2 INTELLIGENT PROCESSOR: Images, action and color are brought to new life to instantly enhance picture quality...
  • LG THINQ, ALEXA AND GOOGLE ASSISTANT: LG TVs are the first to integrate both the Google Assistant and Alexa with LG...
  • DOLBY VISION AND DOLBY ATMOS: Transform your TV into an entertainment powerhouse Advanced image and sound technologies...

The newest LG model on the block will get your attention in several ways -- most prominently, the thin-size. LG bills its W9 television as a "wallpaper" television. Get this: the TV is less than 4 millimeters wide. (If you're not into the metric system, that's less than 2/10 of an inch!)

In part, LG achieves this feat by putting the mechanics of the television into an attached external box. But: still, it's an impressive accomplishment -- one that will soon enable a television you can roll up and put away. (But we might be some time away from proving that concept.)

The W9 gives you everything you get in the other LG models in terms of resolution, sound, connections to digital assistants, and processing. The set is available in both 65 inches and 77 inches.

Pros

  • Size -- thin and light
  • Sound performance -- pop up speaker design
  • Easy cable management

Cons

  • Price
  • Some complaints of image burn-in
  • Requires purchase of extender cable

Samsung QLED TVs

The challenge in shopping for the best OLED TV deepens when you look at Samsung. Technically, Samsung doesn’t make OLED televisions. Instead, they produce what is referred to as “QLED” televisions, standing for “quantum dot.”

In breaking down what that means, some technology journalists have positioned QLED as being closer to LCD television because they require a backlight to produce images. Remember, OLED televisions do away with the backlight.

Yet, QLEDs have their advantages as well. Here's how Samsung explains the differences. Given how close these two technologies are, we’re including Samsung QLEDs in our search for the best OLED TV. But just keep in mind you may end up comparing apples to oranges between the two.

Samsung has four QLED families. A fifth category, the Q900, is billed as being one of the first televisions to produce images in 8K resolution. We’ll leave this one for another day when it and other 8K TVs are more proven.

5. Samsung Q60R QLED TV

Samsung QN75Q60RAFXZA Flat 75" QLED 4K Q60 Series (2019) Ultra HD...
  • SMART TV WITH UNIVERSAL GUIDE: Simple on-screen Guide is an easy way to find streaming content and live TV shows
  • 100% COLOR VOLUME WITH QUANTUM DOTS: Powered by Quantum dots, Samsung’s 4K QLED TV offers over a billion shades of...
  • QUANTUM PROCESSOR 4K: Intelligently powered processor instantly upscales content to 4K for sharp detail and refined...

Samsung offers the Q60R QLED TV, its entry-level line, in six sizes ranging from 43 inches to 82 inches. You can buy the television only, or add an embedded soundbar.

Though all the Samsung QLED TVs work off the same image processor, the Q60R offers less in terms of high dynamic range and a lower "refresh" rate. Again, if you are a video geek, these differences will mean a lot to you. For the average viewer, probably not.

Sound is another big difference. The Q60R line has 2 speaker channels, and outputs sound at about 20 watts -- lower than you find in the LG OLEDs.

Similarities include the resolution, the cabling, and the sound standard -- all the Samsung televisions use the Dolby standard. And all the Samsung models are smart TVs and integrate into the Samsung Bixby app.

Pros

  • Largest number of choices in size
  • Smallest power consumption
  • Simple app integration

Cons

  • Compatibility issues with certain streaming services
  • User settings keep resetting
  • Reports of the TV turning itself on

6. Samsung Q70R QLED TV

Samsung Q70 Series 65-Inch Smart TV, Flat QLED 4K UHD HDR - 2019 Model
  • Your purchase includes One Samsung Q70 Series 65-Inch Smart TV, Flat QLED 4K UHD HDR - 2019 Model, One Remote TM1950C...
  • TV Dimensions: Without Stand – 57.1" W x 32.7" H x 2.4" D .With Stand 57.1" W x 35.8" H x 11.3" D. Product Weight:...
  • Mini Wall & VESA (400 x 300) mount compatibility. Dolby Sound and Woofer included, Output (RMS) – 40W & Speaker Type...

Size choices deliver the biggest difference in the Samsung Q70R QLED. You can purchase a Q70 in 5 sizes ranging from 49 to 82 inches. It's the second-highest priced QLED TV in the Samsung line.

It's got the same core technology -- 4K resolution driven by the Samsung Quantum Processor.

One big difference between the Q70 and Q60 is in sound output. The Q70R goes to 40 watts of sound power filtered through 2.1 channels for speakers. The TV consumes slightly more power, meaning it may, from time to time, seem hot.

Another big difference between QLED and OLED is in viewing angles. Viewers of the Q70R cannot go as far out to the side as viewers of OLEDs can in watching their favorite programs.

One item you’ll like in the QLED line is the lineup of apps in the Smart TV section. Most major streaming services are already built into the platform.

Pros

  • Embedded apps in smart TV suite
  • Improved sound processing
  • Slim design

Cons

  • Lower contrast ranges
  • Viewing angles less than OLED
  • No anti-glare

7. Samsung Q80R QLED TV

  • 100% COLOR VOLUME WITH QUANTUM DOTS: Powered by Quantum dots, Samsung’s 4K QLED TV offers over a billion shades of...
  • DIRECT FULL ARRAY BACKLIGHT 8X: Concentrated zones of precision-controlled LEDs auto-adjust contrast between pure whites...
  • QUANTUM PROCESSOR 4K: Intelligently powered processor instantly upscales content to 4K for sharp detail and refined...

Now we’re getting into the good stuff in our search for the best OLED TVs. The Samsung Q80R QLED TV offers fewer choices in terms of size, ranging from 55 inches to 82 inches.

But count on the same core performance. The television produces images in 4K resolution using the Quantum Processor.

However, this television provides double the motion rate of either the Q60 and Q70. The motion rate is a measure of how quickly the screen refreshes. It also offers high-dynamic range at three times that of the Q60R.

Sound is another big difference. The Q80R uses 4.1 channels of sound output at up to 40 watts of power. That means maximum power consumption also takes a step up.

Pros

  • Sharpness and clarity
  • Easy set-up
  • Better sound

Cons

  • Limited functionality on remote
  • User-unfriendly menus
  • No anti-glare

8. Samsung Q90R QLED TV

  • TV dimensions: Without Stand – 57.1” W x 32.7” H x 1.6” D. With Stand – 57.1” W x 36.3” H x 11.2” D....
  • Powered by Quantum dots, Samsung’s 4K QLED TV offers over a billion shades of brilliant color and 100% color volume...

Finally, we come to Samsung's self-prescribed top-of-the-line. (That is until the company decided to introduce its 8K television.)

The Q90R is available in 3 dimensions -- 65 inches, 75 inches, and 82 inches. It's got the highest price tag (or did, until the 8K was introduced.)

A couple of important differences justify the higher price. The Q90R displays images at 16x high-dynamic range -- 4 times the rate of the Q60. Mostly, you can count on images that are brighter and more colorful by a factor of four.

That's impressive, as many of the same specs remain the same. Samsung uses the Quantum Processor to power this TV. You can count on the highest quality in the 4K resolution.

It is, on the other hand, the most substantial television in Samsung's line. So make sure you have a pair of broad shoulders with you when you are setting it up or hanging it on the wall.

Sound output is also increased, at 60 watts of sound over 4.2 channel speakers.

Pros

  • Highest quality sound
  • Highest dynamic range
  • More connectivity ports

Cons

  • Uneven set-up performance
  • Interruptions from Bixby voice control

Sony OLED TVs

Sony is the third major brand name vying for consideration as a producer of the best OLED TV for 2019. The Japanese company, however, doesn't have as extensive a line of OLED TVs as competitors LG and Samsung.

But, like its competitors, the similarities in the Sony televisions vastly outnumber the differences. Your most difficult choice will be what size you want to purchase.

The models in Sony's line all display images in 4K resolution and have the same specification in high-dynamic resolution. They have the same options for connectivity in terms of external HDMI, Ethernet and USB ports for hooking up laptops or other inputs, or getting the TV up on your WiFi network.

Both machines run on Android. The processors in these machines are different, as are some of the sound options. We’ll discuss these when we dig into the individual models more fully.

Let’s dig deeper.

The Sony A9G OLED television is powered by the company's high-end chipset -- the Picture Processor X1™ Ultimate, Sony's highest-end processor. The X1 Ultimate will power Sony TVs as they transition to 8K resolution.

The details of the X1 Ultimate will make your head spin a little, but the chip helps fuel some exciting features in conjunction with the Smart TV engine in the A9G. For instance, Sony indicates that the processor and related software will allow the TV to analyze and enhance specific objects within a picture.

So there may be a good reason why that green leaf looks greener than you might expect -- and a good reason why you might consider this the best OLED TV.

The Sony A9G OLED is available in 3 sizes -- 55 inches, 65 inches, and 77 inches. The TVs are available with or without a stand. You can also choose to mount the TV on the wall.

Sound is another big difference. The A9G will power you out at 60 watts with both 2.1 and 3.1 channel options.

Pros

  • Outstanding image quality
  • 60 watts of sound
  • Fast access to Smart TV

Cons

  • Uneven remote control performance
  • Confusing menu navigation

10. Sony A8G Bravia OLED TV

  • Exquisite contrast: OLED technology reveals stunningly real detail, depth, textures and color
  • Incredible clarity: x Reality Pro upscale images to near 4K clarity while reducing on screen noise
  • High dynamic range: combined with IMAX enhanced and Dolby Vision for the total cinematic experience

The A8G OLED Bravia television is our other choice as a candidate for the best OLED TV. The main difference with the A9 is the use of the Sony 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme. It's not quite the engine of the Ultimate (naturally, Ultimate trumps Extreme), but you'll still get fast, updating images at a very high 4K quality with high-dynamic range.

You’ll also get what Sony describes as a “sound revolution:” audio that flows directly out of the screen acoustically to fill the room more naturally than a standard speaker. The sound is at 40 watts of power through 2 separate speaker channels.

If the A8G is your choice as best OLED TV, know that it is available only in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes.

Pros

  • Outstanding image quality -- few reports of burn-in
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Excellent stand design

Cons

  • A slightly slower image processor
  • Slow user interface
  • No built-in Internet browser

Of course, the Mini comes with its limitations like the 1.44 GHz processing speed, but surprisingly does not hold back with 256 GB of storage and a simply amazing battery life of 14 hours and 14 minutes. A cheap purchase if there ever was one, the Transformer Mini goes for just $300 - $400, and the warranty will fall in a range of two to three years depending on the extent of your order.

  • Includes an Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU; Full size SDXC card reader
  • The fastest Surface Book yet, with 2x more power. Aspect ratio: 3:2, contrast ratio: 1600:1

Another Microsoft model with many similar features to the Surface Pro, the Surface Book 2 made a splash upon its release. The 4.2-pound weight may be a bit heavier than most people are used to, but the super clear 15-inch screen makes you forget about the extra pounds. With 1.9 GHz of processing speed, it is not the fastest tablet out there, but it has the greatest storage capacity found on this list with 1 TB available. Furthermore, its battery life is an astonishing 17 hours 12 minutes, by far the best on the list, and perhaps the best you’ll find outside of the list as well. Costing $1,200 - $1300 and backed by a one year warranty, the Surface Book 2 continues to impress critics and consumers alike with its high-end quality.

HP Zbook X2-G4 Laptop
  • Incredible power for limitless Creativity
  • OS : Windows 10

Next is a hefty tablet with a hefty price tag. This one weighs 4.9 pounds, trailing the Dell Latitude by just 12.8 ounces, and has a screen size of 14 inches that many people find appealing. The processing speed is good, not great, at 1.9 GHz, and the storage is quite ample with 512 GB. Sadly, this is where the positives end, as the battery life is the lowest on the list with only 5 hours 6 minutes of power. An expensive buy, the HP ZBook x2 costs $1,200 - $1300 and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

As an upgraded version of the 520, the Miix 720 fulfills many of the areas where its predecessor struggled. For one, the weight was dropped to 2.49 pounds and the processing speed was increased to 2.7 GHz. The screen is basically the same size at 12 inches, just .2 inches smaller than the 520, and the 256 GB storage is right on par. Battery life was also improved, albeit not by much, so that the tablet can go 8 hours and 30 minutes without being charged. If all of these distinctions from the 520 capture your attention and you’re willing to spend $780 - $900 instead of $700 - $800, this tablet may be right for you. As an added bonus, Lenovo offers their five-year warranty here as well.

  • 12.2" Full HD 1920 x 1080 Multi-Touch IPS Display

This is the cheapest tablet you’ll find on this list, and possibly the cheapest one worth buying in the vast technological world. Being an affordable option comes with its drawbacks, as the 1.1 GHz processing speed is hardly impressive, and the 64 GB storage pales in comparison to other products. However, this is not a tablet to be skipped over, as many of its features are simply delightful. Weighing 1.98 pounds this is certainly a light device, and the 12.2-inch screen is a great size. Most impressive of all is the 12-hour and 45-minute battery life, and your purchase comes with a limited warranty and 30-day return policy. The cheap price mentioned? Just $400 - $500, half the cost of most comparable tablets and more than a third of the cost of many high-end options.

Finally, the Dell Latitude 5290 ends the list with little fanfare. It does have many great qualities, like the 256 GB storage and the 10-hour and 36-minute battery life. All around is it a pretty average tablet, weighing 2.65 pounds and measuring 12.3 inches across the screen. Its 1.7 GHz of processing speed is commendable at most, but the $1350 - $1450 price tag and limited warranty seem to justify this very middle-of-the-line tablet.

The Verdict

It is now time to unveil the winner. The best Ubuntu tablet is...the Microsoft Surface Pro! Weighing just 1.75 pounds, this is a lightweight tablet that packs a punch. It is capable of holding up to 512 GB of storage and can run at a processing speed of 2.5 GHz, well above average for Ubuntu tablets.

The fantastic battery life is what attracts people the most, as so much can get done in a 13 hour, 54-minute window. Perhaps even more exciting is the super low price of $800, and the Microsoft warranty does not disappoint either. All in all this is an outstanding item, one that has garnered much support from business professionals and casual users alike. It is because of all of this that the Microsoft Surface Pro has earned the number one spot on this list, and carries the proud title of best tablet on the market.

Shopping for High-Quality Televisions: The 10 Best 55-Inch TVs

best 55 inch tvs

Televisions don’t come cheap, and with constantly evolving and improving TV technologies it can seem like you’re always a step behind the next biggest thing. Perhaps the fear of committing to the wrong set or overpaying for a sub par model is keeping you from enjoying your favorite content on a new screen. We’re here to cut through the noise, reduce your stress and help you find the best 55-inch TV for your home.

FAQs: Buying a 55-Inch Television

You likely have a few questions as you begin your quest to find your next perfect set, especially if it has been a while since you’ve researched televisions. Luckily, we’re here to provide some answers to some of the most-asked queries.

best 55 inch tvs

1. Is a 55-inch TV the best size for my room?

The answer to this question comes down to personal preference and space limitations. Some sources recommend degrees of viewing angles and take into consideration the distance you’ll be sitting from your TV; however, there’s no need to follow any set of rules. We recommend ensuring you have the required space on your entertainment console or wall to accommodate the model you’re eyeing. Keep in mind that, on average, viewers tend to sit about nine feet from their televisions. If you’ll be sitting significantly closer than that you may want to opt for a smaller screen size to eliminate noticing individual pixels.

2. When is the best time to get a deal on a new television?

Although a good sale can be found throughout the year, you can traditionally count on great deals near both the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. This usually lines up with Black Friday sales and the kick-off of holiday shopping. Also scan retailers for special pricing when large sports events, such as the Super Bowl, are approaching.

3. How much should I pay for a 55-inch TV?

The sky’s the limit here. You’ll notice that we feature televisions with a wide range of pricing on our list of recommendations. You’ll see that great 4K UHD LED TVs can be found for well below $500, while OLED sets will cost you upwards of $1,500 plus. Review your requirements and your budget before committing and find a set that hits the sweet spot between the two.

How We Determined Our Top TV Picks

We understand that comparing one television to another can be incredibly overwhelming. In the hopes of helping you narrow your search, we’ve sifted through information on countless TV models. You can certainly spend a little less and get a slightly higher-rated television from a lesser-known brand, or spend a bit more for a slightly better-performing set. Final Thoughts Before Making the Big Purchase

There are a few things to consider before adding one of these TVs to your cart. Before committing to binge-watching your favorite show on any of them, review your budget and your must-have features. Some things to consider include if you’ll be using the set for gaming, streaming, watching mostly movies or cheering on your favorite team. Will a lower-priced LED display be more than sufficient, or will nothing less than a high-end OLED do? Answer these questions and then choose the model that will supply you with the most specs on your wish list at the best price that won’t break the bank. Then you can sit back and bask in the glow of your glorious new television.

The 5 Best Streaming Devices

Little boy watching television

The price of a basic cable package has continued to increase year after year, and consumers find themselves paying more for the most premium packages in order to get one or two channels they really want. Streaming devices have introduced the “a la carte” option to television viewing.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Streaming Device

To purchase the best streaming device for your preferences, it’s best to have a list of factors to consider throughout your search. Below, we’ve created a guide with essential things to keep in mind.

Supporting Services

The first factor to consider is it the streaming device offers the services you enjoy watching. Many devices provide different streaming channels, but some of the popular choices are: Netflix, Hulu Plus, Spotify, Google Play Music, YouTube, and more.

If you want more services to choose from, you’ll need to increase your budget and opt for a more extensive streaming device.

Stick or Box

Not all streaming devices are the same. You’ll generally choose between a stick or box, though your decision depends on the portability you need. A box is suitable if you’ll link the streaming device to one television in your home. Streaming boxes also have a more straightforward set-up process, as you only need to hook them into your TV, and you’re good to go.

Streaming boxes often come with a remote control - and some offer voice activation so you can speak into the remote to change through channels. Alternatively, a streaming stick provides excellent portability and doesn’t take up much room. Simply install into your TV without requiring any extra cords in your home.

You have more freedom to choose and change your plans, and you can pay only for subscriptions that you plan to use. In this guide, we’ll break down exactly what you need to know about television streaming and lead you to the best streaming device available.

Our target was the best HD and 4K streamers, making that price tag a little bit higher than the market might suggest. You can certainly get a basic streaming device for a reasonable amount, but with most newer TVs touting UHD and 4K capabilities, we found these streaming devices to be the most optimized for the largest number of users.

Product Overview

With Google Chromecast, you’ll have access to the majority of the heavy hitters in the streaming space: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Sling, PS Vue and VUDU, among others. Voice Control is one big streaming device spec that Chromecast is missing, but it does work in conjunction with Google Home.

The functionality of Chromecast is dramatically different than any other streaming device on our list. Rather than an onscreen interface that you navigate with a remote, Chromecast uses streaming apps already downloaded to your mobile devices to “cast” the content to your TV.

For example, instead of using a remote to select Netflix on your TV, you’ll open the Netflix app on your phone, tablet or computer and choose the content you’d like to view. Then you’ll click the Chromecast button to project that content onto your TV screen. This is all possible once you’ve connected the physical Chromecast device to the HDMI port in your TV and gone through the appropriate setup.

Whether or not you like this system may depend on your current streaming habits. If you already use these apps on your mobile devices, it wouldn’t be any additional work to pass them onto your TV. You also won’t have to worry about losing a tiny remote that often comes with streaming devices.

Product Overview

Roku has five different models to choose from. We went with the Roku Streaming Stick+ for its affordable price and upgraded features. This model, which is a step up from the basic Roku Stick model, works well with 4K and HDR TVs. You’ll have a voice remote, as well as an advanced receiver. The latter makes it easier to stream when your TV is further from your WiFi signal.

With a Roku device, you have the option of downloading a companion app to your mobile device for some additional features. The app allows you to plug in headphones and listen to the content that your TV is streaming. This is great for households that need some quiet without disrupting someone else’s entertainment. The app also makes it easy to search across all your streaming apps for specific content.

If you want to watch a particular movie, you won’t have to search on Netflix, Hulu or others. The Roku app will let you know where you can find it. While Roku has access to the most popular streaming apps like Hulu and Netflix, it also has a huge bonus. You’re able to download Amazon Video content from their app store, which is often excluded on streaming devices due to contractual obligations.

  • Launch and control content with the Alexa Voice Remote.

Product Overview

One of the biggest features Amazon likes to promote about their Fire TVs is the Alexa Voice Remote. With Alexa, you’re able to give the streaming device specific instructions about the apps you wish to use or the content you want to play. To be fair, most streaming devices have voice remote features, including three out of the four other options on our list.

However, Alexa on the Fire TV goes beyond this to access other smart technology in your home, such as lights, Ring camera feeds or thermostat settings. The Fire TV can pair with any Amazon Echo device. If you use Amazon Video to buy content, or if you have an existing Amazon Prime account, then you’ll probably like that the Fire TV is optimal for just this purpose.

Users tend to report that the interface is a bit clunky to navigate and that apps frequently crash. If you don’t use Amazon much for streaming, there are better devices that give you more options and superior functionality.

Product Overview

The Apple TV is one of the most expensive options on our list. Unlike the “stick” design of our previous choices that require you simply to plug a dongle into the back of your TV, the Apple TV uses a small box that is connected by an HDMI cord. The remote is voice-activated, and it has a rechargeable battery that you rarely actually have to charge. However, the remote is also very thin, making it quite easy to lose.

If you use iTunes to purchase TV shows and movies, then the Apple TV is your only real option for accessing this content through your TV. Users love its fast response time and simple interface. Though expensive, many customers are satisfied with the purchase and find it well worth the money.

One significant feature it’s missing is access to a web browser. Most streaming devices have this as an option, for basic web browsing and for streaming content where an app is not available. However, the Apple app store offers a more extensive selection of app content, so you may not need the browser.

Product Overview

Like the Apple TV, the Shield TV uses a box design that connects to your TV through an HDMI cable. The Shield has one of the largest umbrellas of streaming apps, including both YouTube and Amazon Video, a rare combination. It comes equipped with Google technology, including the Play Store, Google Assistant compatibility and access to your Google calendar.

NVIDIA is unique in that its primary focus is on streaming games directly to your TV. So while it is a fully functioning streaming device for all your favorite streaming apps, it also syncs up with many gaming sources to allow you to stream PC games onto your screen. For someone who’s into both gaming and media streaming, this could be the perfect combination.

Like most of our choices, it has voice search and control available, with shopping controls in addition to video play instructions. It also works with smart home tasks like lighting and thermostat control, similar to the Amazon Fire TV.

Ultimately, for the average streamer who wants access to the most basic streaming apps, we like the Roku. The brand as a whole has the best price range of any other, offering you several options to get exactly what you need at the price you want. It has both Amazon Video access and a YouTube channel, and the design is simple to use.

If you are an avid user of either Amazon or Apple content, the best option is to purchase each brand’s device since each design is specific to its own content. Before buying any device, it’s important to check and make sure it has the streaming apps you’ll need.

If you’re considering purchasing one of the more expensive streaming devices, you also might choose one with a heftier price tag for the main TV in your home, and then scale down with some cheaper options for the secondary TVs. Regardless of which you choose, you’re sure to love the flexibility and affordability that streaming has to offer, in lieu of traditional cable.

Tablet Features

As you consider the different tablets RCA has to offer, you should always take note of the various features each has. Functions in a tablet will directly impact your experience. They can limit what you can do or how much you enjoy using your tablet. If you have never bought a tablet before, you may be unclear about what features you need or how a feature could impact usability. To help you understand features better, here is a look at the most popular features and why they are important.

  • Operating system: The operating system for most RCA tablets is Android, but you do want to look at what version it uses. Ideally, you want the most recent version because it offers the best functionality. It also gives you the best access to Play apps. Windows-based tablets are often slower than Android tablets, but using the Windows operating system can give you more power to use the tablet as a laptop because you get access to all the Windows programs and have the ability to save and organize files more easily.
  • Screen size: Screen sizes vary greatly from small to large. RCA tends to stay between seven and 11 inches. The screen size will impact how easy it is to see things on your tablet. A larger screen can make it better when watching a video or working on a document. However, with a larger screen size, you get more bulk, and it may be more difficult to carry it around easily.
  • Ports: If you want more usability with your tablet, then you need to consider the ports. Some only have a headphone jack and mini USB port for charging, while others connect with HDMI. Also, some allow for additional storage with SD card slots, which means you can add to the memory of the device. You should consider what you may need to attach your tablet to when looking at the port options.
  • WiFi: All tablets come with WiFi built in. However, you may want to review or test out the function of the WiFi, which may be impacted by its capabilities, such as whether it operates on 3G or 4G.
  • Cellular service: While we mentioned WiFi above, you may run into tablets that also allow you to use cellular service to provide data. Having this option makes the tablet more usable if you are constantly on the go, but with WiFi hotspots pretty much everywhere these days, this capability is not really needed for most people. However, make sure you think about how you'll be using your tablet so you can be sure it has the connection options you want.
  • Battery life: You want a decent battery life where you won't be tethered to a charger all the time. This really depends on how much you will use the tablet. If you think you will be on it all the time, then you may want to look for the longest battery life you can get.

Of course, there are other features, such as keyboards and sound systems that you may also want to look at, but this list provides you with the basic features that you should always review when buying a tablet.

Tablet Shopping Tips

As you shop for your tablet, you may forget to think about some important points. Get organized before you shop. Here are some tips to help ensure that you choose the right tablet and get the best value for your money.

  • Consider upgrades. Some tablets allow you to upgrade the operating system, but some don't. The operating system directly affects the speed and overall function of the tablet. If you cannot afford to buy a tablet with the latest OS, at least make sure that you can upgrade it.
  • Think about app access. Most people get tablets to download apps, but if you choose a tablet with limited access to a good app store, you won't get the functionality you want. Luckily, most RCA tablets offer Android OS so they sync with Google Play, which provides pretty much every app you could want.
  • Get a feel for the device. The shape, size and weight of a device can affect your satisfaction with it. Think about holding it and using it all the time. Consider whether it is comfortable to hold or if the weight is too heavy. Think about storing it. Will it fit in a bag or purse easily? You want it to be easy to carry and use, which is directly impacted by the shape, size and weight.

Price

When it comes to price for a tablet, there are a few factors that directly affect how much you will pay. Let's take a look at them.

  • Size: The bigger the tablet, the higher the price. This is pretty much standard. You will find that there is often a large price difference for just a few inches of difference in size. However, you should not compromise usability for cost if you can avoid it. Bigger screens are often better if you will watch a lot of videos or if you will use the tablet like a laptop.
  • Memory: Just as with computers, the more memory a device has, the more it will cost. Obviously, you need to have enough memory so that the device isn't slowed down by lack of storage, but getting too much memory is really just a waste of money. So, know how much you need to use your tablet comfortably.
  • Battery life: The better the battery, the more you will pay. Battery life is a constant battle in this industry. The capability of batteries is being stretched to provide you with portability and function. However, if battery life is important, it may be worth paying more.

The Last Word

The main thing when looking at RCA tablets is to understand that they have a lot to offer. While they are not a huge name in the market, this company has made an impact in electronics. You can expect the same craftsmanship to translate into the tablets.

As you shop, don't forget to look for the right features and to be a little picky so you get exactly what you want from the tablet. In the end, an RCA tablet can be exactly the right buy at a good price.
